  1. What is IMaround ?

IMaround is a tool that enables most Web users to view your online presence and communicate with you instantly - without requiring to download and install any software!

  2. Why IMaround?

We believe that Instant Messaging is the best way to communicate quickly and effectively. But sadly, most Instant Messaging systems today have "closed-user" groups that create islands of users, resulting in Users of one system to be unable to communicate with Users of another. IMaround has an "open-ended" user model, which allows non-users (people who don't have a UserID on IMaround) of the IMaround system to communicate with Users. Furthermore, IMaround works over HTTP - but still provides Instant Communication - unlike other HTTP implementations that use a polling mechanism. IMaround also works behind most Firewalls and Proxy Servers without any configuration changes.

  3. How do I subscribe to IMaround?

Go to http://mybusiness.vsnl.in/ and subscribe for IMaround from there. Please enter your billing password to confirm your subscription. Once you have subscribed successfully, go to 'Manage My Services' page and create your users from the control panel. Once you have created your users, click the 'Download IMaround' link form the right hand side of the page and downloan the application onto your computer. Enter the username and password you have created from your control panel when you log on to IMaround.

  4. How do I start off with IMaround?

IMaround is a web-based application. You can use it from a supported Web Browser. If you are an IMaround user, you can download the IMaround Windows client, which will allow you to stay logged in to IMaround without having a Browser window open all the time. To enable others to initiate Chat conversations with you, your Signature File has to be visible to them. The Signature File will dynamically display your Presence State to anyone viewing it. You can embed your Signature File in any medium that supports HTML - such as your email signature, your Web Page, your Blog, your Web email etc

  5. What is the Signature File? How do I use it?

The Signature file is basically a "Presence Indicator". Its an HTML code snippet that when opened in a Web Browser (or any other application that supports HTML) retrieves your Presence State from the IMaround server and displays it as a graphic. You can use the Signature File whereever you need to embed your Presence. Possible places are - Emails, Web pages, Blogs, Forum posts, Bulletin Boards etc - The list is endless since it can be used in any application that supports HTML rendering.

  6. Is it necessary to have the "Signature File" attached in every outgoing mail?

If you want to allow the recepient to be able to see your presence and initiate a conversation with you, you have to ensure that the "Signature File" is being sent in the email

  7. Can anyone initiate a Chat with an IMaround User?

Theoretically, any Web User can initiate a conversation with an IMaround User. IMaround provides an Accept / Reject / Ignore feature so that users are able to choose whom to Chat with.

  8. Can the IMaround User initiate a Chat with someone else?

IMaround works on an "open-ended" User group model. Which means that there are 2 entities, a User and a Subscriber. The User has a presence state and may Chat with many Subscribers. Subscribers don't have to register themselves with IMaround in any way - they are random entities who have been sent the "Signature File" by an IMaround User in some form. So in effect, only Subscribers can initiate a Chat.

  9. Can the User close his IMaround application window while chatting ?

Yes, the application will not terminate, but will reside in the System Tray. The User will be notified of incoming events using a "Balloon Message"
  10. What is meant by Attach and Detach in the Chat window?

If the User wishes to continue the conversation outside the IMaround application window in a separate window, the Chat window can be "detached". A separate window is opened in which the User can continue the Chat session. If the User wants to resume the Chat session within the IMaround application window as before, the "Attach" button can be clicked.
  11. Can the User close the detached Chat window ?

Yes, but that would also result in the Chat session being terminated. If you wish the Chat session to be continued, but not in a separate window, the "Attach" button can be used.
  12. How do I ensure the identity of the person who has sent me a Chat request?

Since IMaround's User system was designed to be "open-ended", we do not require that a Subscriber be registered with the system. This means that there is no Authentication of the Subscriber done by the IMaround system. It may be possible that the person sending you a Chat request is not who he / she claims to be.
  13. Does IMaround work behind Firewalls and Proxy servers?

Yes, IMaround uses ports 80 and 8080 for communication. Most Firewalls have access enabled over these ports, so IMaround works seamlessly behind them. IMaround also works behind HTTP and SOCKS 4 and SOCKS 5 Proxy servers.
  14. When I compose an email, my Presence state is not being displayed?

Ensure that you are composing the email in HTML mode. IMaround only supports HTML mail right now.
  15. Why are some people not able to view my Presence state?

Some email clients and Web based email providers block "External links to images". For IMaround to be able to display the Presence state dynamically, it needs this to be enabled. Some email clients have an option to "trust" the sender. If the sender is trusted, the images are also rendered correctly. So make sure that the recepient has you as a trusted sender or has enabled external images to be loaded.
  16. My Signature is displaying the wrong Presence state. What could be the problem?

Its possible that you have not enabled the "Send pictures from the Internet" option in your email client. What this means is that when your email client sends the email along with your IMaround Signature File, it will send the HTML code in the signature file as it is. By default this option is disabled, which means that when you send a mail, the email client sends the Presence state graphic as part of the email, rather than sending the HTML code. This means that when the email is opened, the Presence state is not rendered dynamically, but rather it displays your Presence State as it was when you sent the email.
